why does Outlook automatically delete my new mail?

My Outlook (synchronised to my Hotmail account) has been behaving very
strangely. When it opens, it initially downloads only my junk mail - no new
mail arrives in my Inbox, even if if I 'Send and Receive All'. If I then move
something in to my Inbox, it will then download all new mail to my Inbox, and
immediately move it to my 'Deleted Items' folder, from where I have to
retrieve it all.

Today (for the first time), when I went to my 'Deleted Items' to retrieve my
new mail, it had already been deleted - only the headers remained. So I lost
all my new mail, including a very important interview appointment. What can I
do to fix this?
