Why does Publisher add decimal places to numbers in mail merge?

I am using the mail merge feature in Publisher and it is adding decimal
places to the dollar amounts I am importing. It is adding 000000000001 or
9999999999999 at the end of most, but not all, of my imported numbers. I
have thoroughly edited my spreadsheet so I'm sure that the trouble is in the
Publisher merge. Help?

How do you have the numbers formatted in your data base? How many decimal places
do you have in the Regional settings.
Try formatting your field as text.

Either convert the field to Text, or export a CSV file and merge from that.
