Did this copy of Office 97 come pre-installed on your prior computer? If
yes, it is OEM software and cannot be installed on any other computer. It
can, however, be used for purchasing an upgrade version of Office.

Another idiot who doesn't know the difference between downloading and
installing - and I've really no idea why; the two processes are nothing like
each other.

Definition of Install from the Chambers English Dictionary

to put (equipment, machinery, software etc) in place and make it ready for
use.

Please learn the difference.

I don't know who you are, but I do know Alex Nichol would disapprove of your
manners. You can explain anything without the insults. Unless of course,
like Jesus Christ, you're infallible yourself!!

I'm sure you mean "install" not download?

I don't know what your error message was but I'm pretty sure your Dell
has Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed and Office 97 probably
won't install on it.

You can upgrade to a later version of Office or search earlier posts on
this newsgroup for a workaround which may or may not work.

Sorry, I know that's not the answer you wanted.

I think you meant "install." Before anyone could help, you would need to
supply more detail regarding
any error messages it gave when you tried.

It's easy enough to infer what he meant.

Good advice. There may be other situation in which it would be more
difficult to tell what you (Herb) really meant.

Was Alex also known for giving wisecrack non-answers to questions?

....Oh, sorry. Another poster in the thread clears that up:
