why won't powerpoint play a video that windows media player does?

I add a video to a presentation and it doesn't play. However it plays fine
in Windows Media Player.

PowerPoint uses MCI Media Player to play the video. Click Start > Run. Type
mplay32.exe in the command line and click OK. Play your video from there. If
it doesn't work in the MCI player, it won't work in PowerPoint either.

If it works, its probably the path length that is too long.
Create a folder on your C:\. Move the ppt and movie into the C:\. Open the
ppt file and reinsert the movie. Now see if it works.
