will autosave work if document was opened but not manually saved?

Our client has configured autosave for documents, although on one occassion a
powerpoint document was opened but crashed before a manual save was
performed. Will autosave work in this circumstance? It has not work for us.
We are running in a Citrix environment, the Citrix server did not crash, only
the user session.

PowerPoint's AutoRecover solution is set to work at a given time interval -
the lowest you can set it at is 1 minute (using Tools | Options | Save). The
default is 10 minutes.

Try changing your time interval and see if that helps.
