Will my Office 97 work on my new XP system?
I finally upgraded my computer. I am now running Windows XP. Can I load my
Office 97 Professional Edition to my XP? Will it run right?
Many thanks.

Outlook 97 will probably barf, but I haven't had any issues setting up users
with Office 97/Outlook 98 on Windows XP. Couple of caveats though...

1) Need to have local administrator rights for certain features to work
(e.g. spelling, thesaurus) unless you are adept in backing off security
permissions on NTFS formatted drives + registry. (XP Home may prohibit you
from doing this, but don't take my word for it since I work with Windows XP
Professional exclusively.)

2) The built-in firewall interferes with Outlook 98's ability to get new
mail notifications from an Exchange server. (IMAP/POP3/SMTP doesn't depend
on this feature).

If you can afford an upgrade to Office 2003, it is well worth the price of
admission.

Office 97 does work with Windows XP, but some users report problems
installing Office 97 when Service Pack 2 for Windows XP is installed.
There are two ways around this problem:
1. You could uninstall WinXP SP2, install Office 97 and related service
packs, and reinstall WinXP SP2.
2. You could leave WinXP SP2 intact and do a custom installation of
Office 97 in which you set the Web Authoring Tools (HTML) to "not
available" in the setup options.

You should read the End User License Agreement for your copy of Office
97 to see whether you are allowed to install Office 97 to another computer.
