Word is getting very antsy and won't download any improvements from MS
download sites. Says I need permission from admin. This is my computer and I
am the admin!

This isn't a Word or Office issue. Sounds like a Windows Update / Office
Update issue. Try posting in m.p.windowsupdate and provide a LOT more
information - your OS version & service pack level, what changed since the
last time it worked, etc.

I am running "windows xp, home edition" recently updated with all patches in
place, etc.

When I try to access Help in Word, I can't get it. It tells me help not
installed, would you like to install? I say yes and then get error message
"Cannot install -windows installer error 1635" or something to that effect.

OK - so how is that related to "MS Download Sites" ?
Have you tried running a detect & repair in Office, and reinstalling ALL
apps to run ALL from your local computer?

I thought if I downloaded all recent upgrades, patches for MS Office it might
solve my problems with Word. A friend told me to upgrade windows XP first
and you alluded to that also. This, I did and still cannot access downloads
or upgrades, patches, etc for Word or Office.

Did you try the detect & repair as I suggested?

Re downloads - that is not an Office issue per se at all.

I ran "detect and repair" and it says something to the effect that "this ap
unable to run, this patch package not working, etc, etc. This is the same
message I get when I go to "help". Don't forget that I tried to download new
stuff for Word and couldn't. That is when I was told to make sure windows xp
was up to date - which I did.

Do you have the *legal* installation media/CD?

I doubt this is related - unless Office is not properly installed.

Lanwench,
Yes this is a legal upgrade disk (2000). I had purchased my first "Office"
years ago.

Here's what it is all about. I tried to download patches, etc a few
moments ago and this is what I got -
####begin####
Office Update is unable to check for updates Help

The Office Update site is unable to check for updates on this computer. This
may be happening because of one of the following reasons:

You do not have administrative privileges for this computer.
There is a network problem and the detection catalog used by the Office
Update site failed to download. Go back to the Downloads home page and try
running detection again.
Windows Installer patch files (.MSP files) from previously applied Office
updates are missing from the \Windows\Installer hidden directory on your
computer. MSP files are stored on your computer after update installation
completes because they need to be referenced for future update operations. If
the files are missing you will not be able to apply Office updates. You may
also be unable to uninstall Office products as a result of the same problem.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.
You installed Office updates in the past and then upgraded from Windows
Installer version 1.0 to Windows Installer version 1.1. For more information
see the KB article Windows Installer May Prompt for Install Source if
Unavailable.

OK - gotcha. So then did your Detect & Repair do anything at all?

This part needs to be posted to microsoft.public.windowsupdate as it is not
an Office question. You really have two different issues.
