Windows 98 using word 97 error message word cannot open existing " Square"

when I click on my word icon an error message comes up
saying word cannot open existing"square symbol"...when I
click ok and try to open any of my documents it says it is
being used by another user do you want to make a copy. I
then try to close word and it asks if I would like to
change the normal template I hit cancel until it finally
shuts down. I called microsoft and was given the website,
I went on and found a similar problem but only gave
solutions if using Win NT. I also downloaded some stuff
that they said might help yet I still get error messages
and can not get into my documents. Please HELP!!

How are you starting Word? Are you using the Quick Launch bar in the
Windows Taskbar?

If so then it sounds like you are double-clicking the icon instead of
single-clicking.

Granted this shouldn't happen but I believe the bug is encountered on
slower computers.
