Windows cannot find C:\ (doc) Make sure you typed the name correct

Sounds like the sort of problem caused by Norton Anti Virus. Obviously, it
isn't a Word problem as such but something messing with Vista.

Ive just started having this problem myself

So far i can confirm its not antivirus, firewall, BCM or firefox which is
causing the issue

Its possible it has something to do with printer drivers as i can no longer
print from word.

However as background i have had Vista ultimate and office basic loaded on
this pc with the same printer for the last 12 months without issue

The problem for me started with double clicking an outlook attachment. Since
then i have no longer been able to double click a word file from anywhere in
windows explorer or outlook without getting the error message. Right click
and open with word gives me no error message but word opens without the file
opening and then freezes
The only way i can access a file is to open word. then use the File>open
dialog

I have tried the following steps so far
I have removed the network printer from my pc
Have 'repaired' the word installation
Have removed and reinstalled word
Have deleted the word data registry entry
Have deleted the word addins registry entries
Have tried the winword /r fix

So far no luck. Any other suggestions from anyone lucky enough to have fixed
the problem so far

The only addins which i have installed are the following

pdf995.dot (has been installed for more than 8months)

Send to Bluetooth (only one that shows up when clicking manage COM add-ins.
Cannot be removed- message "The connected state of Office Add-ins registered

Further info on printing problems
When i click File Print I am returned to the document with no response
printer wise
When i click the Quick Print button i receive following error
Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup
Show Help>
This error can appear if a default printer has not been designated or if the
application is unable to locate an existing default printer. To correct this
problem, try one of the following in Microsoft Windows:
If a printer is not available in the Print dialog box, add a printer.
If the application cannot find an existing printer that is already
installed, set the printer as the default printer.
If a default printer is installed but the application is unable to use it,
uninstall the printer driver, and then install the latest version of the
printer driver.
If the printer is on a print server, make sure the printer is available, the
network is functioning, the server is not stalled, the printer is not out of
paper, or the printer is not suspended by the administrator. Printing issues
associated with a network printer are best handled by your local network
administrator.
For more information about setting up and troubleshooting printer
connections, see Windows Help and Support. (Click the Start button, and then
click Help and Support.)

The printer i am trying to print to is a network printer. I have tried
removing it and readding it. It is in my printer control panel, shows as
default, and can be printed to from other applications

Additional information that may be relevant
Trying to save as a pdf using the Microsoft add-in brings up the error box
"Could not find file"
It does however actually produce the file

I'd definitely remove the Bluetooth add-in. Bluetooth drivers are notorious
for being badly written and creating havoc with Office apps.
But you list of problems suggests that you do not have a compatible locally
installed printer driver set as the Windows default. Word MUST have a
compatible locally installed printer driver to work.

Hello Terry

I dont have a locally installed printer. I have never had a locally
installed printer. Word has worked fine like this for over a year. By locally
installed i assume you mean the printer is connected by cable to my pc not
over the network

The bluetooth addin has also been there over a year. So im thinking it must
be something else. By any means the bluetooth addin cannot be removed anyway.
I have removed the pdf addin also but this had not fixed the problem. About
at the stage where i need to toss a 12month old laptop because it is no
longer useable.

As far as im aware nothing has changed locally on my PC which has brought
this error to the fore. There were no updates immediately before the problem
appeared and i had made no system changes

Cheers

No, "locally installed printer" means that the driver is installed on your
machine (not on a network). You don't have to have a printer attached to the
computer. If you are printing to a network printer, you still need to have
the driver installed on *your* machine.

Then yes i have the printer installed on my pc. It is no longer accessible
though.

As above
When i click File Print I am returned to the document with no response
printer wise
When i click the Quick Print button i receive following error
Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer setup

Then install a printer driver (the generic text driver from Windows will
suffice for a test) and set it as the Windows default. Test again now.

THis error is really quite bizaar, but surprisingly, the printer seemed to be
the issue.

Here is my situation and "work around" resolution:

I am using MS office 2007 with Vista.
about 40-50% of the time, the error occurs when attempting to open word, but
only about 20% of the time w/other office programs (e.g. powerpoint and
excel).

Anotherwords, when the error occurs with Word, it often does NOT occur
w/another Office app, so I CAN usually open an excell file ven when word does
not open...

Further, when I drill down through program files and attempt to open the
winword executable, it still does not come up (although I don't get any
visable errors doing this).

So... after reading through all the posts, I went into control
panel/printers, and changed my default printer from my Brother network
printer to Microsoft XPS Document writer.

After doing that, word opened normally!

I then immediately went back to control panel/printers and changed the
default printer back to my brother network printer.

Word, and other office apps continued to work (open) normally.
and FYI, they were also able to print normally using my brother network
printer.

Later, the intermitent problem again reccoured, and I had to re-trace these
work-around steps, and again, was granted the same intern solution.

The other work-around solution appears to be always leaving the MS office
apps running in the background. Apparently, if they are already running, I
can open additional documents.

FYI this fixed my problem. I'd never been able to open Word docs from explorer - just Word, no other apps. I'd tried a couple dozen ideas (deleting Word reg keys, etc) with no luck. Turns out the docx extension was associated with the Word Viewer (which I'd had installed before I had Office). Associating it with Word finally fixed things.

Instead of stealing all these threads, would you please start a new thread
and explain exactly what your problem is . These three posts tell us
absolutely nothing except you know how to confuse.

K

I forgot to say that I haven't got printer availavable and no addins o
complements installed, so my hutch is that the problem is that this word 2007
causes conflict with the registry keys and files remaining of OLD VERSIONS OF
WORD, cause Ive had installed office 2002 and office 2003 in the past, and
then at the moment to upgrade to office 2007 I let the program to do this
un-installation by itself.

YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST INSTALL A LOCAL PRINTER DRIVER and set it as the Windows
Default printer. Word will not work without a local printer driver.

Hi I have the same problem than stated in this post I cannot open doc and
docx files by double clicing. I get the message "Windows can't find ..." even
though the fiel exists and I can open it thru the "file->open" command of
word. I have Office 2007. Only doc and docx files do this all other office
files work OK.
I tried all that was suggested in this post and nothing fixes it. I hav a
log with process monitor. If you need it I can send it to you. This post is
quite old maybe there is already a solution for this bug.
Thanks
François

I've installed Office 2007 SP1 & the (subject) problem persists. Only in word.

Has this problem been solved? I'd be grateful for a positive answer.
