I have Vista Ultimate SP1 and still getting this problem.

I've had this PC for about a year... only used for gaming and video
rendering. Installed Office Pro 2007 yesterday to edit a couple Word 2007
docx files. Get the problem discussed in this thread. Really happy someone
mentioned to open docx files from within Word instead of Explorer or folders.

But I can confirm that the SP1 didn't fix the issue.

Among my 4 Vista PCs... this is the only one with the problem. Here's a
guess, error caused by an application conflict if you have Office Word Viewer
SP3 installed (which I do on this box). I need to uninstall the
free/downloaded viewer app and test again.

PS: Terry, are you the same Terry Farrell that used to work with DMD, WMM
and PhotoStory? Small world.

BINGO!! Uninstalled Word Viewer (Office Word Viewer 2003) and problem is
fixed.

Just a guess here, but the Word Viewer conflict is probably at the root of
the problem for all of us... even if you don't have the Word Viewer
instlaled. Printer drivers and other apps include a Word Viewer plugin to
open docs in print preview (for users who don't have Word installed).

Maybe someone more technical can confirm this.

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone is still having this problem? I only went to vista
about 4 months ago and wasn't aware of the problem until about a month and a
half ago. I've run all the updates I can, I've run Microsoft Office
Diagnostics, but the problem is still there. Also, in my case, I can still
get the problem even if Word is open - but only on certain files.

Can anyone help?

Stewart

I had this problem last fall and wound up wiping my laptop and reinstalling
everything, which fixed it until yesterday. It's back. The other associated
problem i(just like last time) s that Outlook started getting very slow (not
responding), which also caused problems with the Dynamic CRM Outlook client.

Numerous threads have suggested something related to virus scan, mine is up
to date. If I look at what's changed on my computer this week the only
updates have been to Windows Defender?

I took Denfender out of the startup stack, rebooted and the problems are
gone. Word works, Outlook it happy? Now to figure out, why.

Hi,

I have the same ridiculous problem. Has there been a resolution for this
yet??

I DO have a Lenovo Thinkpad, running Vista Business & Office 2007. I often
make my Office 2007 documents compatible with Office 2003-2007 so people
without Office 2007 can read them. When I try to open those documents from
Windows Explorer, I get this same annoying message. I've been living with it
for over a year now, and get angrier with MS every day.

HELP!
Thank you

Run the Repair option from Word Options. If that doesn't sort the problem,
then the likely suspects are AntiVirus (NAV or Kapersky are renowned for
this) or a bad third party add-in in Word.

I am having this same problem. It just started a few days ago. I am running
MS SB Office 2003 on Vista Home Premium SP1. i do not have BCM installed.

I have repaired/unistalled/reinstalled office. I have changed my default
printer. No solution.

The problem occurs with trying to open word or excel docs from within
outlook or within windows explorer. i get the "windows cannot find" message.
I do not have windows defender turned on. I have live onecare.

This is a very frustrating problem! please someone FIX it!

Hi,
You might want to check if the current ´admin policy¡ on your system allows
you to access ´drive C:\¡. It seems this problem is still present in
Windows 7.

I figured out a solution (hope it works for you).

Go to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office

Rename Word12.pip to something else (like Word12.old).

Double click a doc/docx file - worked for me!

I noticed this post references Word 2003, hopefully, renaming
Word11.pop will do the same thing.

I am having the same issue. I have 2 Dell machines both running Vista 64 and
Office 2007. Just about two weeks ago this problem stared on one of my
machines, but the other is fine.

None of the above solutions have fixed the issue. I am running Windows Vista
SP2 with Office 2007 SP2. Would love to hear from MS with additional things
to try.

Thanks

Are you using Norton AV or Kaspersky? If either, then disable the Office
plugin option.

I have the same problem (cannot open .doc files from windows explorer or
browser). Word starts and gives such message.

I found that if Word is running, there is no problem.

I have tried to fix the way Windows Explorer calls MS Office, and it worked
for some time. After a couple of days (maybe after windows updates itself),
the problem persists.

I followed the intructions on the following page and the problem disappeared:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;940791

(I just dont know for how much time).

By the way, my computer uses WinXP and Office 2007.

Thanks very much Terry for your reply. The computer came pre-loaded from
Dell with McAfee. Removed it and installed AVG. Problem remains.

Open Word and go to Word Options | Resources tab and run the diagnostics.
