Windows XP Doesn't recognize files of MS Office 2000 after reboot

I just got a new Windows XP Dell desktop computer. I'm discarding the old
computer and I've moved most of my files and applications to the new system.
Everything was working fine. I installed MS Office rebooted it several times
and started using my IPOD and USB Memory stick to move files. I could see
the icons for MS Office files.

Last nigfht I sut my computer down and now it doesn't recognize any of the
MS Office files.
Word files now have Word Pad Icons and Power Point and XL files all have
funny icons. The MS Office applications are all installed on the computer and
I can open files from the applications. If I open a file by double clicking
it, the file opens in Word Pad instead of MS Word.
