Winword Error Message

I recently downloaded some templates from the Microsoft web site. Now whenever I try to open MS Word, no documents will open and I get the error message Winword.exe has generated errors and will be shut down by Windows. you will need to restart the program. What happened and what can I do about it? Is there some corrective software that can correct the errors?
