word 2000 under XP Pro

When Word 2000 is set to use a network printer, it takes at least 1 minute to
open a .doc file. If the default printer is set for a local printer, just
the driver is installed, no actual printer, the .doc files open immediately.
Is there some way to leave the default printer set to a network printer and
have Word 2000, and Excel 2000, for that matter, operate normally?
