Word 2001: Protecting sections - leave Header and Footer editable?

How can I keep the header and footer editable when I am protecting a
document for one section only? Or perhaps it would be better to ask
how I can protect one section of the document without blocking access
to the header and footer? I also noticed that protecting a document
turns off the "as you type" spell checker in the editable sections.
Any workarounds for these? ESPECIALLY the header/footer thing.
