Word 2002 losing its mail merge data source

Hi,

I have several Word documents that are linked to Excel
spreadsheets for mail merges. When I open the Word
documents, I get the following message: "*.doc is a mail
merge main document. Word cannot find its data source,
path\*.xls". Even after I re-create the link and save the
main document, the next time I open the Word document I
get the error message again. I've tried replacing the
normal.dot template with a default version to no avail...

I'm using Word & Excel 2002 w/SP2.
