Why does Word increase the document number every time you
open a new blank document? Is there any way for Word to
always say document1?

Does it not reset itself when you close and reopen Word (or if you have
Outlook open and use Word as your email editor, you need to close both Word
and Outlook, then Word should start again at Document 1).

If this isn't happening, try cleaning up your hard disk following the advice
in this FAQ:

Yes, it does reset itself when I exit Word but why does
it not start at document1 after I close a document
window? Why does the number keep increasing? Once I
exit Word and go back in it starts again at document1.

That's just the way it works. Or, as MS would say, "This behavior is by
design."
