Word 2003 has disappeared from my computer

Whenever I try to save a Word document, I get a box saying that the content
is not compatible with Word 97. I don't have Word 97. I installed Microsoft
XP 2003 Student and Home about a year ago. I have since installed updates to
bring the software up to service pack 2.
I have tried every type of update I can think of, but when I tried to
install Word 2003 update to service pack 3, I got an error message saying the
update couldn't find the software.
I am currently using Symantec virus protection with Windows firewall.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

M.,
You might have to completely uninstall and then reinstall your Office disk.
That shouldn't cause you to lose your data.
Make sure your OS is up to date first.

Two things I noticed from this site:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=923618

1. It does requires XP *OS Service pack 2*, Vista, etc.
2. It contains all previous service pack and updates, so you don't have to
re-install those before installing Office service pack 3.
