Word 2003 upgrade issue, links broken

George Wilson

I am assisting a customer running Office 2003 on Windows 2000 system. He was
recently upgraded from Office 2000 and had many files linked to Excel charts
that were created in Word 2000. Opening these files with Word 2003 and double
clicking on Excel objects for editing produces this error: Microsoft Office
Word can't start the application required to open this object. an error
occured and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to
repair this feature now? Made an attempt to repair but then get the message:
This object was created in Excel. This application is not available to open
this object. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has
not been deleted, moved, or renamed. I checked the link properties and they
are all pointing to the correct location, if I reinsert the link it works
fine. The customer has many documents with hundreds of these types of links
and they will not update so it is not an option to reinsert all of these
links. The only information I found on the MSKB was for the same error in
Word 2000 trying to use an uninstalled resource, in this case Excel is
installed and appears to be working fine. Is there a blanket way to update
all these links? Is this a common issue that Microsoft may have a fix for?
Any ideas will be appreciated.
TIA
George
