Word 2004 hangs while saving to iDisk (which also hangs)

Processor: Intel

I recently signed up for iDisk so that I can save Word files remotely and access them on my laptop. When I am saving to the iDisk, Word consistently hangs. Sometimes it hangs for a minute and then works. Sometimes it doesn't and I have to force quit (which takes many tries of clicking 'force quit' before it actually closes). When this happens, I never have the option of saving to the desktop and I am entirely dependent on AutoRecover. This is ironic, considering I was *trying* to save the document periodically to avoid losing work. I do not have this problem using iDisk with other non-Office applications (Adobe Acrobat, Preview, etc.). Hanging also occurs when I open Word first and try to select a document that is saved on the iDisk. Perhaps this is an iDisk problem? Or Word? I don't know. This seems to me a pretty basic operation and yet neither my iMac nor my MacBook can handle it. Please help.

I would NEVER attempt to save directly to an iDisk, and I suggest that you
stop doing so.

Word is unique amongst applications in that it uses a very peculiar
"streaming" file access protocol, which results in several hundred disk I/O
operations to complete each save.

This is never doing to be reliable over the Internet.

Cheers

I agree with John - iDisk is not intended to be used as a working disk in
the manner a local HD would be. The concept is to *upload* files for storage
so you can then *download*, *view*, or *print* them from anywhere you have
internet access. Even with other applications it is a risky business to
actively be accessing files on a web server.
