Word Hangs on File, Open

M

Matt Anderson

Hi --

My Word 2008 hangs everytime I do a File, Open. It is ok when I do
File, Open Recent or any other menu item. I tried deleting the plist
file in preferences with no luck.

Any ideas?

Is there a way to reload Word for Mac?

It is more than annoying because I forget about the issue periodically
and lose open work in Word due to having to force quit the app.

Thanks!

First & Foremost: Do Not reinstall Office. The files & issues that cause
such problems are not a part of the installation & don't get repaired or
replaced by reinstalling. That is a "last resort" when all else fails except
in certain specific & uncommon situations. Doing so can further complicate
matters.

To help correct the problem you need to confirm that Office (12.2.4) is
fully updated & that your version of OS X is also current. Run Apple's Disk
Utility - Repair Disk Permissions then restart your Mac. If that doesn't
correct the problem reply here with your exact version numbers as well as
any other details you can provide, such as: where the problem files are
stored, exact wording if you get an error message, the first ~15 lines of
any error log or crash report, what file format the files are saved as, etc.

All software is up to date and ran the repair -- no change.

Below is the information from the error report that gets sent out.

I have a video of it occurring that I can send out if that helps.

It never gets to the point of selecting where any files are located.
File, Open brings up a very large version of the "finder" like
application -- it spans about 12 screens wide.

Were any Office apps running when you deleted the .plist file? If so it
would have done no good, so quit all Office apps, try that again & restart
before launching Word. If that doesn't correct it try these 3
troubleshooting steps separately & reply with the results of each:

1- Run Word from a different [preferably new] User Account,

2- In your regular User Account hold Shift while you launch Word ,

3- Log out then hold shift while you log in using your regular User Account.

Thanks for your suggestions.

No apps open when I deleted it.

Tried Word, File, Open on a Guest account and it worked fine.
Shift while opening Word, still hangs
Shift while logging in, Word still hangs

Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I just wrote a rather long post in this thread on this forum:

"MS Word 2008 always "quits unexpectedly" "

I suspect that you will find the suggestions there very helpful.

Solved it!

Thanks.

I ran a utility called preferential treatment, apparently it one or
both of these were "not right"
com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist
HERE: Users/MyUserName/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
com.microsoft.Word.plist
HERE: Users/MyUserName/Library/Pr

The utility can be downloaded for free at:
