Word 2004-strange formatting problem

Word 2004, version 11.5.3.

This only just started happening, but it is really strange. I am in
the process of getting an abstract ready to submit for a meeting later
this year. The style for the abstract is pretty straightforward: Title
should be Bold; Authors and their affiliations should be in italics,
and the main body of the abstract (about 300 words) should be in plain
text. I just started to do the final formatting, and I saw some really
strange things happening. If I select the title, and hit command-B,
all the text in the abstract turns bold. LIkewise, if I select the
authors and their affiliations and hit command-I, everything turns
italics. If I hit it again, everything becomes normal text. However, I
can get the styles I want by hitting command-z a few times. I tried
shutting down Word, getting rid of the com.microsoft.Word.prefs.plist
file in ~/library/Preferences/Microsoft, but that didn't help. I also
tried pasting the text into a new file, which sometimes gets rid of
anomalies in Word, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions?

TIA
