word 2007 change numbering scheme

I recall in 2003 i if a document was in one numbering format like 1.,
1.1, 1.1.1, etc format I could select all and change the format and it
would change all applicable "numbered" items to the new format. In
2007 if I do that under the Numbering or Multi-level Lists icons
everything gets changed even non-numbered text so that everything is
now numbered. This creates alot of work when changing a large
document.

Is it possible to change the documents numbering style (if style is
the right word) for the entire document and have it only change
"numbered" items.

Also are there any differences in Numbering and Multi-level Lists
other than that one is multilevel that I should know about. It seems
to me that Multi-level Lists is just a sub set of Numbering but I may
be misleading myself...

Thanks
Robert

As you've discovered, W2007 behaves a bit differently. 1) If you are
applying paragraph-style-linked numbering schemes, try this: place the cursor
in the first highest level heading/ numbering level; then, in the Multilevel
list gallery List library, click the numbering style you want. 2) If the
numbering doesn't get applied to all the heading levels, select the entire
document and click None in the List library. Then try 1) again. I have
little experience with outline/multilevel lists that are not linked to
paragraph styles. So someone else will have to help you with that.

Thanks Pam, that worked. I was shocked that it was that easy.
