Word 2007 hangs when opening docs

Hi, there -- hope someone can help. I am running Word 2007 in Windows XP
(Home and Student), and lately it's been taking longer and longer to open
documents. When I'm opening a new document, I'll see the message "Running
virus scan" for ages and ages, and I am unable to work with any other Word
documents that are already open. When the new document finally opens, it
doesn't always open on top -- not a huge problem, but annoying given how long
I've been waiting for it!

Incidentally, this happens with old documents (created when I had Word 2002)
and with ones created since I started using Word 2007. I have my preferences
set to save as Word 97-2003 *.doc files, since very few people I work with
have the capacity to read *.docx files.

I ran diagnostics on Word, and supposedly nothing is wrong...but it
obviously is. Can anyone help?

Thank you!

It has nothing to do with Word (or Office) which does not have any type of
Anti Virus at all.

This sounds typically like a Norton Anti Virus bug. If you have NAV, open it
and then disable the Office Plug-in option. If you have a different AV, then
go to the AV site for support on how to disable checking document as you
open them.

I do have NAV! After reading your response, I FINALLY figure out how to turn
off scanning of Office Docs (Norton doesn't make it easy to find the advanced
options!), so hopefully that will take care of it.

Thanks!

I'm back again, unfortunately. Word is still hanging -- sometimes when I
open a second or third document, and sometimes when I open the first one of
the day. I'm not getting the virus scan message anymore; I'm not getting any
message this time around (at least not until it tells me it's not responding).

Word definitely doesn't like being open at the same time as TurboTax, but at
least that will be over soon -- still, there is definitely something going on
with Word itself, and any advice on fixing it would be most welcome.

Oh, and having found the advanced options on Norton Internet Security
(that's the version I have), I can't find them again! I was going to check
if for some reason it reset itself and was causing problems again...so if
anyone can tell me how to find where I did it before, I'd be very grateful!

Thanks.

Well, I'm not 100% sure the Office Plug-in is disabled; as I said I can't
figure out how to get back to Advanced Options to check.

How do I find the user temp folder?

Thanks!
