Word 2007 opens but allows no functionality, crashes on closing

When I open Word 2007 using Vista, I can type on the page, but the scroll
bars are frozen, and no other functionality is available. I cannot move the
cursor on the page, change font etc.

On closing, the message is "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working"
followed by "Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then the
program restarts in an endless cycle of crashing and restarting.

I have removed and reinstalled the program to no avail. PowerPoint and
Outlook work fine.

Any ideas?

Incompatible legacy third party add-in. Start Word in Safe Mode: from Start,
Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does Word start and close OK now? If yes, check the
contents of the Word Start-up folder. Rename any *.dot files found to *.bad
and then try starting Word normally. If it is OK now, rename the *.dot files
back to *.dot until you find the one causing the problems.

I have the same issue. Word starts in safe mode with no issues. it closes
with no issues

i have tried looking in start up folder but it is empty.
also when i attempt to remove add in of flash paper from macromedia via word
options and word addins it automatically regenerates it even after removal.

i am running vista and word 07

can you help with this?

thanks

You'll have to uninstall it by running Macromedia setup and selecting the
Office plug-ins. The setup will remove the add-ins. But check with
Macromedia support first as they may have an update to make it compatible
with Office 2007.

My problem is somewhat different. My OS is Win XP Pro. Word 2007 opens and
appears to function normally. However, it inevitably crashes when closing and
then restarts after automatically after sending the error message to
Microsoft.

A Microsoft Technician previously logged onto my computer when I installed
the application because of installation failures. To my knowledge the
software is currently installed properly. I've also run Microsoft Office
Diagnostics which does not report problems. I also downloaded SP 1 for Office
2007. So far none of these interventions has eliminated the problem.

I'd appreciate whatever assistance you can offer.

Thanks.

Test closing when in Safe Mode. From Start, Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word is now in Safe Mode. Does it close correctly now?

I tried to run set up for macromedia but no options for addins. I uninstalled
macromedia completely and uninstalled and reinstalled office 2007 but
incredibly it still loads the same default template with the same error on
closing. any other suggestions please would be very welcome

Uninstalling/Reinstalling Office rarely achieves anything as all the
registry settings, templates, add-ins and not removed or overwritten.

I suggest that as this is a macromedia problem, you contact their support to
see how it can be removed or if they have an update that is compatible.

This worked, excellent idea! The location of the startup file is:

C:\Users\ <Your Windows login Name> \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word
\STARTUP

Just clean out all of the doc files in there. I started getting this
problem when I accidently pushed the power off button on my laptop
when running Word. It tried to alter my Normal.doc file, and then my
problems dominoed from there...

I managed to find the solution from technical support who suggested the
following and it worked as long as i rebooted after deleting the word keys
and before repairing with the CD as follows hope this helps someone else

1. On your keyboard press the Windows Key and the letter R simultaneously to
bring up the 'RUN' window
2. In the run window please type in 'regedit'
3. Navigate to the follow locations -
4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word
5. Highlight the Word keys and delete them
6. Repair Office with the CD inserted and repair Office 2007

Perhaps I have misunderstood how the threads work on this site because this
is only my second time visiting this community. If I am not mistaken, I
understand the response from Terry as follows: I should uninstall Word 2007

remove the add-ins. But check with Macromedia support first as they may have
an update to make it compatible with Office 2007.

If I have understood the response correctly, I don't see how it corresponds
to my issue. First, I am not using Macromedia software on the computer that
Microsoft
Office 2007 is installed on. Second, I would like to know what the
relationship is between Microsoft Office 2007 and Macromedia. And lastly, I
would genuinely appreciate a response that addresses my particular issue.

Terry, I am having the same problem with MS Word 2007 and it started a few
days ago when I closed MS Word. I get the error message, it restarts MS Word
once and I still can't do anything other than Type and tabe through the
Options at the top. I can't scroll, select text etc. I did a search on *.dot
and renamed them. Removed the ones I didn't need. I still can't get MS Word
to work. I can open it in Safe Mode though but not sure if I can do all my
work in safe mode and have it save/share?

Any other suggestions for MS Word issue? I ran the diagnosis tool and it
found nothing. I did change the settings in Safe Mode so it would download a
file in the future to update or do diagnostics but what is going on?

Thanks,
Robin

If it starts in Safe Mode it proves there is nothing wrong with Word. It has
to be a third party add-in or possibly a corrupt DataKey. Have you been
through:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

Have you looked at how to find add-ins

http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx

And finally delete the Word DataKey

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data
