Word 2007 problem

We recently installed a Email-to-fax solution, which has the ability to take
a Office file, and send it as a fax. There is a virtual printer driver that
is used to convert the document and then it opens up Outlook where the
document can then be faxed.

What has happened recently, on Windows Vista, is that I lost my ability to
double-click on a Word document and have it open up. If I start Word and
then open the document, it works fine.

The other problem is that when I exit Word, I get a message that "Word has
stopped working". And in the event log I have a error that says:

ID: 0, Application Name: Microsoft Office Word, Application Version:
12.0.6331.5000, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.6215.1000. This session
lasted 205 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a
crash.

EventID: 7001

I have uninstalled Office 2007 and reinstalled it, and the same problem is
occuring.

How can I resolve this? The company that provided us with the client side
tools says they're fully compatible with Windows Vista and Office 2007......

Uninstalling/reinstalling is nearly always a waste of time as none of the
customisations, add-in, macros, templates, or anything else is removed. So
uni8nstalling/reinstalling just takes you back to square 1.

This sounds like a bad third party add-in and it is most probably the fax
software has added incompatible macros. Test by running in Safe Mode. From
Start, Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document and test for closing now. If it is OK now,
then you have installed something that has placed an incompatible add-in in
Word/Office.

Why is it then if I double-click on a Word file (on my desktop for example)
it doesn't load the file, Word just hangs.

This happens if I uninstall the 3rd party tools as well.......

Same cause most likely. A third party add-in. It certainly works for most
users. When did it start going wrong for you? It was probably after you
installed something that installed an add-in. If it has been like it since
you installed Word 2007, then it is likely to be a legacy add-in that is
incompatible with Office 2007.

Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in a space and then "%1" (include
the quote marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK your way out.
