Hi Carole:
Bob's right: you will get a more complete and knowledgeable answer in the PC
Word group because those good folks use Word 2007 all day. I use Word Mac,
which is quite a bit different.
However, there are three sets of styles in Word:
Default, Built-in, and Custom.
The Default set are required as part of the document structure. You cannot
remove them -- if you could, Word would no longer be able to read the file.
Amongst these are the Heading 1 to Heading 9 series -- the "Heading" styles.
The "Built-in" styles are the rest of the 147 styles that are pre-defined in
Word. They do not exist in the document unless you use them, but they do
exist in Word, so you cannot create a new style of the same name.
The "Custom" styles are the ones you create yourself. The cannot have the
same name as either a built-in or a default style. You can delete them.
I believe Word 2007 has a mechanism that enables you to HIDE the default
name of a style if you have assigned a new name as an alias. If you ask in
the Word 2007 group, they will be able to tell you how to switch that on.
You can't remove the style, and you can't remove the name, but you can hide
it. As fare as the user is concerned, that's the same thing.
Mac Word does not have that feature, so I can't tell you much about it.
Cheers
I need to remove and rename styles in a document. The modify dialog box adds
the new name and does not remove the old one. When i delete a style it does
not delete and sometimes does not give me the option to. I am working on
templates and need to rectify this ???????
Thanks
