Unfortunately all that error report stuff may mean something to an Apple
developer but it's as much gibberish to most of us as it [probably] is to
you:) We're *users* for the most part, not programmers or technicians.

What we need to know is:

Does the problem occur repeatedly with the same documents or does it
"randomly" happen with a variety of different docs? What is the source of
the files - did you create them? This version or an older version? Or did
they come from another user? Which version created them? How did they come
to you - USB stick, email attachment, network...?

*When* does it happen - on opening the file, while working in the file after
it's been opened, when you save it, when you close it?

What do the files contain other than plain text?

Did this behavior exist from initial installation of Office 2008 or is it a
more recent development? If a new development, what else may have changed
around the same time? Even if it doesn't seem related it could be pivotal.

The more accurate & descriptive you can be the more likely someone will be
able to offer meaningful suggestions:)

Thanks for your reply. Here are my answers to your question:

The problem occurs with the same documents again and again. It does not matter if I copy the text to a new document. I created the documents. Some of them were created in Word 2003 (or is it 2004?) for Mac, some on Word 2008. It happens when I have been working on the file for a while.

The files contain nothing except plain text and footnotes. The problem does not occur when I use the older version of Word (as I have to, as I need to get some work done).

The problem occured with some file from the initial installation of Word 2008, disappeared, I thought, but came back with a vengeance yesterday. I update my OS (10.5.2 at the moment) continually when updates appear, as well as MS Office.

This is "Document Corruption". Chances are, it's the footnotes (one or more
of them) that are corrupt.

"Copying the text into a new document" will not fix it. But a "Maggie"
might...

1) Create a new blank document

2) Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark

3) Copy it.

4) Paste in the new document.

5) Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the Word PC-L mailing list who first publicised the
technique.

Hope this helps

Word 2008 and Office 2008 are simply becoming too frustrating to use. Office 2004 was much better with very few problems.

With Word, it crashes EVERY time I do a "Save" to back up changes but the initial document document creation "Save" is OK. It makes no difference if the text is 100% new or copied and pasted into the file. Sometimes Word will recover the wiped out text but not always.

Using "Save As" works but adds extra steps. Now I copy everything and paste it into a working file in TextEdit as a backup--again an extra step to be safe. This is NOT productive and I use Word for work documents.

If the next update from Microsoft does not fix these problems, I'll go back to Office 2004. Its sad since the MacBook is great and I wanted new versions of all my software.

I am using an Intel MacBook running 10.5. I tried using the Office 2008 update from Mactopia and it only made things less stable. Stability is KEY to software success and it is lacking in Office 2008.

I backed up essential files, wiped my hard drive and reinstalled everything and that did not help.

Make sure you send your feedback through to Microsoft. Use Help>Send
Feedback from any application and copy your post in.

Microsoft will not read it in here.

Cheers
