Word 98 font problem

K

Kathy

I'm on an iMac running OS 9.0.4 and Word 98 of the Microsoft Office
Suite. The problem I'm having has to do solely with the onscreen
appearance of fonts: No matter what font I've selected, what I see
onscreen is a rather wide-spaced, courier-type looking font. However,
when I print my document, the fonts I've selected print correctly.
The Font pulldown menu also indicates the fonts correctly.

Just before this occurred, I changed the default font in my Normal
template; a first for me, since I've never been able to get it to work
before. Any chance these two incidents are related?

Also, I quit Word, shut down my Mac and let it (and me) take a
breather, but when I restarted, the same problem popped up again in
all my docs.

Any ideas/help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi Kathy,

I can't remember if Word 98 has this preference but under Preference> View,
if there's a preference for "Draft font", be sure it's not checked. Also
under Edit, is "Match font with keyboard" checked? (I actually have no
idea what that Preference does, but it *might* be relevant.)

If Preferences aren't the problem, perhaps it is the Normal template that's
screwed up. With Word closed, navigate to Applications> Microsoft Office
98> Templates and rename your Normal template (to, for instance OldNormal).
Now reopen Word and a new Normal will be created.

Check to see that everything is operating normally in a new document and
that fonts are displaying correctly. If they are, try changing the default
font again by opening the Normal template directly (by navigating to it as
above). After changing the font in Normal, do a save and close Normal. Now
open another blank Word document. If the default font has changed to your
specification and other fonts are displaying correctly, then your problem is
fixed and the original, renamed Normal template was corrupt and you can now
trash it.

If the problem isn't fixed, post back and we'll try again.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Sorry I posted directly to you, Kathy. I'm using a friend's computer,
with OS X which I'm not used to, and I hit Reply to Sender instead of Reply
to Newsgroup!
