Word and Powerpt (Office2003) hang when I try to access different.

I have two external drives mounted. When I go to Open to try to read a file,
first the word Open blanks, then it says Open not responding
after a full minute it finally opens . I have to keep hitting enter for this
to happen.

Using XP (Vaio). This does not happen with other programs, but does with
Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
