word Attachement Problem

Can someone help.
My boss is having trouble opening word attachments in outlook 2003 from a
one or two different people.
What happens is, the word doco atachement opens for about a second before
closing itself.
This doesn't appear to be happening with attachments from other people and I
can't seem to find an answer anywhere else on the web.

I used to have problems when there were fullstops in the file name (like
dates Letter 30.08.05.doc) - but they were never recognised as a Word doc so
didn't even try to open!

I wish that were the case.
It's weird that the same message works on my machine running Office XP and
not on the Bosses who is running 2003.
The files do open on his machine and then close themselves. It's almost like
word is reading through the doco and then deciding that there is something
that it doesn't like, then it shuts it down without any error messages.

Thanks for your help, but as it turns out you should never trust the users to
tell you the correct info.
He was in fact running with Office 2000 and after runnign a detect and
repair all was good.
Not too sure exactly what was causing the problem.
