Word Closes

I'm using Word XP (2002?). When I open Word end try to
save a document, Word closes and the document is gone
unless I was working long enough to have a backup. When I
start again, I can save the document. Since I know this I
always open Word and try to save. If this works I can
continue, otherwise if Word closes I have to restart.
Someone with a simular problem and a solution?
