Word crash

Sejal

Hello, I am experiencing excruciating problems with Word. When I'm working in
a document, it lets me save it twice or thrice. If I work anymore in the same
document, it will not let me save--instead just freezes up. This has been
happening for over a week. NOthing seems to help--tried to even install
spyware software; didn't help either. Any suggestions will be deeply
appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Sejal

Does this happen with every document you work on, or just some documents?

If it relates to some specific documents, then I would suspect that they may
be corrupt. See
How can I recover a corrupt document or template - and why did
it become corrupt?
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm

If it relates to every document, then I would make sure that your anti-virus
software is up to date (you should update it daily). Then close Word and use
the anti-virus software to run a full scan of the system.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna,

No it happens with every document. The virus definitions are up to date as
of yesterday; didn't help either. All other office applications seem to be
working just fine, only Word has this problem. (Office 2003, XP). I thought
of creating a new document everytime I use Word and then eventually combining
all the documents together, but the formatting (tons of figures) is a massive
headache. :(

Thanks,
S.

Shauna,

After going through the link you provided, there seems to be one possible
reason why this is happening: I'm using Endnote extensively (can't live
without it), and recently they (Endnote) had me update to 8.0.2 to be
compatible with XP SP2. My XP is however not updated to SP2 (I'm too scared
to do that).

Could this be a reason for the frequent Word disasters? (This would also
explain why Excel and Powerpoint seem to be getting along just fine). If yes,
do I have an out? I CANNOT stop using Endnote :(

Thanks in advance for being my angel :)

It is possible that the Endnote update is not entirely compatible with the
unpatched version of Windows. The answers are therefore to roll back to the
previous version of EndNote or patch Windows to SP2.

Hi Graham,

I think I have the problem solved (knock on wood!); I followed the
directions on the link provided by Shauna first (converting Word doc to web
page and back to word), and then I used your link to clear up the mess, and
looks like it's done! I have been using word for the last 4 hours without it
having crashed on me!!

Thank you both so much for being my angels. Your help is very deeply
appreciated!!

Sejal.
PS-FYI: Endnote tells me not to roll back to the previous version (Endnote
8) because it is incompatible with XP. Endnote 8.0.2 for SP2 apparently works
with or without SP2 patch. You are right, the best way out for me is to
swallow my nerves and install SP2. Thanks!
