Word crashes on launch

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

It used to be, till a few weeks ago, that when I double clicked on a .doc file from Finder, Word would automatically launch and the file would open on a Word blank page.
Recently, when I try to open a file this way, I get a message saying that Word has unexpectedly failed. I then launch word from the Dock and thereafter have no trouble opening the file.
Does anybody know how I can restore the prior functionality ?

Crash on launch is often just a matter of repairing disk permissions. Try
that & post back with your results if it doesn't correct the problem. Be
sure to include specific Office & OS X version numbers if you need to go any
further to get it resolved.

I regularly "do" repair permissions, either right after an installation or as a matter of course after a few days' use. Even so, I did right now, permissions were repaired without incident and I tried to launch Word from a .doc document. Same result:"Word quit unexpectedly..." If I launch Word separately, let it materialise on my screen and then click on the .doc document, it comes up nicely. If I exit Word and then try again with the same of another document, Word will launch. So, it seems it's only when, on that day, I haven't previously launched Word, that the "Word quit unexpectedly .." message appears.
I use 2 Intel dual core Xeon, OSX 10.5.4, Microsoft 2008 Word for Mac Version 12.0.0 on a Mac Pro (early 2008)

Hello again -

If the specs in your last post are accurate it's no wonder you're having a
problem :) If your Office version is still at 12.0.0 you're *3* updates
behind. I'd suggest that you launch Word (or any app in the suite) then go
to Help> Check for Updates. You'll probably need the update to the
AutoUpdate application first (2.1.1), then you'll be able to go directly to
12.1.0 (SP1) followed by the latest which is 12.1.1 which should put you
current. Have a look at the suggestions on this page before you begin:

Microsoft may not be responsible for dropping the line when I am downloading Word 12.1.0 but if other electronics suppliers can keep track of how much a customer has downloaded when the line drops and reconnect without starting the download anew, why can't Microsoft do the same ? Of at least offer a CD at a reasonable price ?
I was downloaded Word 12.1.0 from 10AM to 6PM and had it about 50% downloaded when the line dropped. On reconnection, the download started from zero again. That problem isn't likely to make friends for Microsoft.

P.S. Sorry I sent you an email directly. It was strictly my mistake.

Hello Yvon -

I understand your frustration, but unfortunately that's one of the drawbacks
of modern technology - It presents serious challenges for those who are
prevented from keeping pace. Unfortunately it isn't anything that can be
addressed from the MS Server end. Servers don't determine the limits on a
connection, they're basically nothing more than tomes being read from.

I'd suggest you first contact you ISP to see if there's anything to be done
from their end. You might also contact MS Support directly, explain the
circumstances & see if they might be able to assist in some way. I'm sure
you're not the first or only user to run into such a wall.

If you know anyone who does have a high speed connection you could have them
download the updates for you - it need not be a Mac. If that's a possibility
have them d/l to a file, move/copy it to a USB stick or some such, then copy
it to your Mac's HD. You may also be able to use the facilities at a library
or other location that has high speed access.

I had to face reality and ask a buddy to download those big files for me. Updating the 12.0.0 seems to have done the trick. Word will now open when clicking on a document. Thank you all for your help.
