Word crashes when I hit ctrl and mouse click(equivelent of mouse right click)

Version: 2004 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Intel Hello,
My word program stops responding (freezes) whenever I use the control key (ctrl) with the mouse click. This essentially prohibits all the functions you use a right click on a mouse, such as spell checking a work. The program stops working and I have to force quit.

Someone at the Mac store thought it might have to do with macros but I have no idea what to do or what that means. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks so much!

In the Information Technology field, "something to do with" is another way
of saying "I don't know".

Try deleting the following files:

1) Your Normal template. This can be anywhere, but unless you have moved
it, it will be in your Documents/Microsoft User Data folder. The file is
called simply "Normal" and has no extension.

2) If the following files exist, delete them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

~/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

Now do a power-off restart: Shut down the computer and wait for the power
to go off, then start it up again. That fires some system clean-up
activity.

Now empty the trash before starting Word.

See if that fixes it.

Before anything else you need to make sure you have Office (11.5.6) & OS X
(10.4.11) fully updated, that you've repaired disk permissions & restarted
your Mac. In order to troubleshoot any performance issues -- especially ones
of a technical nature -- we have to have that information. It's pointless to
chase symptoms if the updates haven't been applied. If it continues...

Further to that, does this happen in one specific document or in all
documents including new blank ones? Is it a new development in an
installation that has been operating normally or has Office recently been
installed? Did you install any new hardware/software or modify anything on
your Mac at approximately the same time the problem started?

Launch Word in a different User Account & see if the problem occurs there.

I (Mac 10.5.8) have started having a similar problem about 2 weeks ago, first when I tried to modify a table created in Word 2004. Then the freezes became more frequent and since I created a calendar.doc years ago which I update for everyone in the company that's a problem. I had both Word 2004 and 2008 (Family & Student), so I removed Office 2008. That helped for a day or 2. Then the freezing became so constant, I tried the 12 step program suggested above and removed Office 2004. Despite unrepaired conditions (see below), I reinstalled Office 2008 (Cannot find 2004 installation disk), but still cannot work on Calendar doc, which freezes. I can work on other documents.

In the Disk Utility, when I ran "Repair," the following has remained:

"Permissions differ on "Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-rw-r-- , they are lrw-rw-r-- .
Permissions differ on "Library/Frameworks/HPSmartPrint.framework", should be drwxrwxr-x , they are lrwxrwxr-x .
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
Permissions differ on "Library", should be drwxrwxr-t , they are drwxrwxr-x .
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
Permissions repair complete"

I am not an expert. What should I do????

Your problem is "nothing like" the other poster's problem, and the cure is
quite different :)

Your problem is happening with a specific document, which leads me to
suspect that it's a "corrupt document", and the cure is a Maggie:

The Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

Hope this helps
