word displays alternative text instead of images- why? an option?

In (Office XP) Word, I can paste in an image, but as soon as I scroll it off
screen or come back to it, it disapears and (if any) the alternative text
appears. When I load an existing document, I can't see the images unless I
reformat them, and then they disappear the minute my document is redisplayed.
This is obviously enormously frustrating. I have search all through options
and accessibility options, including global ones for the computer, but
nothing seems to control this 'feature'. Can anyone please help me
understand how to get out of this awful mode? I am using Office XP Pro.

Try reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Start | Control
Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced | Troubleshooting. If this
fixes the problem, then you might want to check the website of
the manufacturer of your video card/graphics adapter to see if
there is an updated driver available.

Can you clarify what you mean by "alternative text"? If it is a field code
of some sort, you should be able to toggle back to display of the picture
using Alt+F9.
