Word does not recognize mis-spelled words

I accidentally typed indentification and this word was not flagged by the
spell checker, while other words in the document were. I checked the custom
dictionary and this word was not included. Detect language automatically is
off. I am using Word 03 SP1. Any ideas on how to keep these errors from
occuring.

TIA,

Pete

Try splitting the word into indentif ication. Are either of these parts
identified as misspelled? If not, your text is formatted to not check
spelling or grammar. Click on one of the misspelled words. Word will display
the formatting applied to that Word (and the source of the formatting).

If it says "no proofing" or "do not check spelling and grammar" you need to
modify the language setting. Select your entire document (Ctrl-A) and use
Tools > Language to change the setting.

You are correct that the parts of the split word still does not appear to be
flagged as misspelled, but I have to admit I am a bit lost with your
directions.

When you say click, you mean a left mouse click? Where is the formatting
and source of formatting displayed? I see the style in the menu bar, but
the style does not have proofing mentioned anywhere or check spelling and
grammar at least in the top dialog box?

Right clicking does not help either.

I think I can fix it using select all, but I would like to understand your
diagnostics.

Thanks for the help,

Pete

Ok, right clicking has an option for revealing formatting of selected text,
but I see language under font. There are no proofing or spelling options
and word is not detecting mis-spellings in this section.

Best wishes,

I found the cause of this problem.

The word indentification was cited with a superscript using End Note.

I guess the field codes when appearing next to a word force the
speller-checker to ignore that word and misindentify the word as correctly
spelled.

Cheers,

Pete

Only if you have "Ignore words with numbers" checked on the Spelling &
Grammar tab of Tools | Options.
