Word/Excel opens then immediately closes

I have and enduser whos running XP PRO SP2 who has recently been
upgraded to Office 2007. The problem is when Word or Excel is started
it will open for a moment then immediately shut down. The short cut
has been removed and Word and Excel were both started from the
programs menu. Same thing happens again. Does this require and
uninstall then reinstall or is there something simple I have
overlooked?

First see if the issue occurs when you start either application in Safe
Mode. Hold Ctrl, start the application and continue hold Ctrl until you are
prompted to start in Safe Mode. If the application doesn't crash then the
likely issue is a third-party add-in since you are encountering it in both
Word and Excel.

For Excel, exit the application and locate your XLStart folders (there may
be one in your profile and one in the Office installation path) and see if
you have any files in the folder. If so, move them out of the folder to
prevent them from loading when Excel starts.

For Word, exit the application and locate your Office/Startup folder,
location in the Office installation path, and Word startup folder, which is
in your profile. Or simply use Windows Search and search for a portion of
the file name you found in the XLStart folder.

I have the same problem on 5 machines (Windows 2000 Pro Sp4, XP SP2) running
different versions (office 2003 pro, office XP) but only observed with Word,
whenever word is opened it stays for a moment and then closes automatically
without any error. Outlook doesnt work as well if using word as editor.

I have done almost all the troubleshooting measures found, as its happening
on 5 machines on same times in same office location i suspect it might be a
virus???

I am using Trend Micro CSM SMB on that site for protection which didnt
detect anything.,

Any help ??

Found it,

It was Network Printer which was mapped to these machines through GPO, means
drivers were not installed locally which causes the word to crash.

Yep, that would do it. You described this issue perfectly. It only occurs in
Word, it starts, displays a new document, and then crashes. It's at that
point its query to the printer driver fails. While it sounds similar to the
original issue posted, it's different since an unavailable printer driver
only causes Word to crash and not Excel. :)
