Word has to reinstall every time it is used

I recently installed Windows XP from 98 all programs were lost. I just
installed Office Professional 2003 and Word is not working correctly.
Everytime I try to enter it says preparing to install. Any suggestions?

Apparently, you chose "new installation" rather than "upgrade"
during XP's setup. That's why you lost your programs.
