Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)

Every time I open a word doc I get the following error message immediately:

"Word cannot start the spell checker.
The spelling checker files may be missing.
Make sure that the spelling checker files are installed or use the Microsoft office installer to install the spelling checker"

I have just received my Office for Mac 2008. I am a new Mac user. In Word I cannot get the single spacing to work. I have gone to Format Style and Format Paragraph to be sure my settings are correct. I have removed and reinstalled the program twice but cannot get this bug out. Old documents are not effected only new documents. HELP!!!!!

Hi Scott:

OK, three things:

1) Please do not tack a different problem onto someone else's post. That
is most likely to get YOUR post missed. Post a new message for each new
problem.

2) Most questions are impossible to answer without the version information
we ask for.

3) It saves you a lot of time if you first Search the forum before posting:
you will often see that the answer is already there.

In your case, Daiya posts the answer nearly every day. Here's what she
says:

It's not actually line spacing that is the problem. Word changed the
default to add more space between paragraphs, so that each paragraph
will be single-spaced, but between paragraphs, you get extra space.
Paragraphs are created every time you hit enter.

To change in just this document, select all, go to Format | Paragraph.
Look down to the find the Spacing: After field, and change 10 to 0.

To change this in all documents created from now on, change the Normal
style.

First, select Format | Style. Normal should be selected.

Click on Modify--make sure "add to template" is CHECKED. You'll see a
Format menu in the bottom of the dialog--select Paragraph from it, and
change the Spacing: After setting from 10 to 0.

Cheers

OK, have you followed the instructions in the message?

Make sure OS X is fully updated (10.3.9) and that Office is at 11.4.1), and
run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. If you have any specific issue
post back with details.

Cybertaz,

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately I have tried both updating & running disk utility. No joy!

Has anyone got any ideas? Many thanks in advance
