Word/normal.dot/Toolbars problem??

I have created a toolbar called CustomMacros and have placed a drop-down menu
in it with various macros. A few macros that I don't use any more I have
deleted out of the normal.dot and have dragged their labels off the menu bar,
however, once I close out of Word the label still appears in the menu. I've
also added another menu to the toolbar and split up the list of macros
categorically since the list in the one menu was getting too large, yet when
I close out of Word the changes I've made have been ignored and my original
long-listed menu remains intact. So, the problem is any changes I make to
the toolbar will not stick. Anyone know what's up with this? Thanks for
your help.

It's likely that Word isn't saving your changes to Normal.dot on exit.
There are a number of commercial add-ins that interfere with that, the
most common being some versions of the Adobe Acrobat add-in. See
http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adobe_acrobat_toolbar.htm for details.

Thanks for your quick response. I think that's exactly what's happening - my
Normal.dot is not saving on exit. I went to the website you mentioned and
tried the code listed there, but that didn't have any impact on my problem.
I then went into the Tools, Template and Add-Ins and did not see the
PdfMakerA.dot template there either. Any other ideas???

Open Normal.dot itself, using the File > Open dialog. Make your
changes and use File > Save. Close Normal.dot and reopen it to see if
the changes are still there.

If not, make the changes again. This time, hold down the Shift key
while you click the File menu. You should see a "Save All" command in
the menu, which is there only when Shift is down. Click that, and
repeat the close/open/verify.

To track down the cause, you'll have to go through a fairly tedious
procedure of removing all installed add-ins, one at a time, until the
problem goes away. The one whose removal makes the problem stop is the
likely culprit. Reinstall the others. This procedure is described in
more detail in the last section of
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. (It's for
diagnosing a different problem, but it will work for this one.)

Hi Jay,

Your initial hunch was correct. It was Adobe that was causing all my
problems. I was snooping around in other people's problems and found another
person having a similar problem to mine. Anyway, here was one of the
responses that solved my problem:

Is Adobe Acrobat 7.0 installed on the computer? If yes, then the
Acrobat 7.0 Create Adobe PDF toolbar add-in for Word prevents Word from
automatically saving changes to the normal.dot template (which is where
macros and toolbar customizations are stored). See
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=331259 for
several solutions to the problem.

I went to the above website and there it mentioned how if you've had Adobe
Acrobat 7.0 installed, Microsoft Word (2002, 2003 or XP) no longer saves your
macros, preferences or custom settings. Anyway, to make a long story short,
the solution was to go into Acrobat 7.0, click the Help button, Check for
Updates Now and install the updates. Did so and now I'm no longer pulling my
hair out in frustation. Thank everyone for their help.

Thanks for confirming. I won't make a big deal of the fact that Graham
Mayor's article that I cited in my first reply would have given you the same
advice. :)
