Hi, john.

It's not a good idea to DELETE Normal.dot. Instead rename it as OldNormal.dot or something like that. When you restart Word, a new Normal.dot will be created, and you can copy your customizations from old to new.

You probably deleted the wrong Normal.dot file. More than one Normal.dot can be present on a computer if more than one user is set up. In Word, click on Tools | Options | File Locations. What directory is specified for "User Templates"? That's where your normal.dot is located. You can rename Normal.dot in the specified User Templates directory. Or you can open Normal.dot in the specified User Templates directory, delete the unwanted text, and save it.

It sounds like you changed, then saved, your normal.dot as
the blank document. If you're the only user, go ahead and
delete all the normal.dot's you find, else look for it/them
under your own username and delete them from there.
Don't empty recycle bin yet if you have things in the
deleted normal.dot that you want - copy them out first, then
empty recycle bin.
