Word Problem-Gibberish

Is it possible to take a Windows 98 "notepad" file from
one computer, put it on a rewritable cd-rom, and then
install it and open it as a Word document on a new
computer with Windows XP? When I tried to do this, there
is no text, just symbols.
Also, is it possible to download all the files from the
cd rom at once onto the XP system? I seem to only be able
to do them one at a time.

As far as Windows XP is concerned, your CDR is just another drive. Select
the files you want to copy with Windows Explorer, copy them to your hard
drive, uncheck their read only property and away you go. Word will open text
files produced by Notepad and you can save them as Word documents.

1. Never use Word directly with a CD. Bad things happen, including, in
particular corrupted documents. Use Windows Explorer to copy the files
to/from your hard disk. You can copy them all at once this way, too.

2. Notepad files are plain text, which Word should be able to open without
problems. If this isn't working, see point 1.

Open the CD drive in a standard Explore window, Ctrl+A to select all,
then drag em to the destination folder.

And bear in mind that files coming off a CD are usually read-only. To fix:
right-click, select properties, clear the read-only checkbox.
