Word Ruler

Hi,

For troubleshooting Word Problems you can try many steps.

To begin with, start Word in Adminiistrative mode, by using winword.exe /a
switch.

If in this mode, you are able to make the changes to the ruler/tab marks;
then rename the global template normal.dot to normal.old after closing
Word. Then retry, and it should be possible for you to work with the
ruler/tab marks etc.

LEt me know the results.

Regards,
Subbu.

It sounds like you may have a large Drawing Grid set. Believe it or
not, the Drawing Grid affects the ruler and tables too. :)

Turn on your Drawing toolbar and go to Draw/Grid and take a look at
the Grid Settings. These settings are used when "Snap objects to grid"
is turned on.

For example, if the Horizontal spacing is 1" then you can only drag
the manual tabs stop every 1" on the ruler. Note this does not apply
to setting a tab, only moving a tab after it has been set.

I'm having a similar problem with the ruler in Word 2003 with a little difference. The measurment setting is stuck on picas and will not change to inches. When I look in Tools, Options, on the general tab it does say inches though. I have tried both suggestions made here already with no success. If I open work using the /a switch everything works fine, but when I open Word normally (after deleting the normal.dot file and replacing it) the ruler is still the same.

Can someone please give me an idea, the ruler is driving me crazy.

Thanks, thetoad.

Recreating Normal.dot will do little good for Ruler settings as this
type of data is stored in the Registry. It is also bypassed when you
start Word using the /a switch. :)

More than likely what you are seeing is character units instead of
picas. Here is an article that will provide the instructions you need
to make the necessary changes:
