Word switches to French in the middle of English document

I have a Word 2003 (Windows) document that, when I'm spell checking it,
Word turns to the French dictionary and tries to look up words in a
couple of paragraphs in French. It returns to English a few paragraphs
later. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to fix it?

perhaps select ALL the text and then Tools, Language, Set Language.
