Word will not allow me to edit inserted excel spreadsheets

I have excel spreadsheets inserted in word files and the
are all of the sudden not allowing me to edit the
spreadsheet. I receive the following error when I try to
edit "The server application, source file or item cannot
be found. Make sure that the application is properly
installed and that it has not been deleted or moved."
