WORD won't respond

I have Windows98 with Microsoft Word 2000 (office suite) and for years it's
been running fine. Out of the blue this week WORD would not open (neither
with clicking on a document nor the WORD icon) The Microsoft WORD box with
the copyright comes up as if the program is going to load, but just hangs
there and then I do CTRL ALT DEL to get rid of it. (EXCEL STOPPED WORKING TOO
- it opens, but will not open any documents). I first tried using "repair,"
but nothing changed. I then followed steps from Microsoft, and tried starting
WORD with the /a Switch (to open the program without any add-ins, global
templates, etc.), and it DID open, but it still would not open a document (I
would click on OPEN, choose a doc, but then the program just sits there and
nothing happens. I have to do CTRL ALT DEL and shut the program down). I
tried "renaming the Normal.dot" file(as well as deleting it), and WORD then
opens, but still the same thing - cannot open a file. Microsoft also
suggested emptying the Startup Folder - but my Startup FOlder is EMPTY. I
also tried deleting the registry value, but it didn't help. I finally
uninstalled Microsoft Office, and reinstalled the entire program, and WORD is
still malfunctioning. Now, it won't open unless I go in and delete the
NORMAL.DOT file first, then it will open, but it still won't open any
documents. (I can, however, use my INSERT FILE command to insert a document
into the open page, a way around things, I guess). I don't know what to do.
NOTE: I did find a trojan on my computer this week (VIDRO.C) which was
removed. My computer is virus and spyware free, no trojans, and all temp
files/cookies/etc. are cleaned daily. HELP!!!

Thank you so much Anne, for your fast reply and the link to a great article.
Unfortunately, I have tried everything in it (renaming the NORMAL file,
deleting/renaming the registry entry, "repair," turning off Norton,
everything, Even reinstalling the damn program. Nothing. I am thinking it has
to be something with my system. Perhaps something got deleted? I have no
idea. If after reinstalling the entire Microsoft Office Suite it is still
malfunctioning, my only thing left is to reinstall Windows98 and see what
happens. If you have any other suggestions, please don't hesitate to write!
