Word X ALWAYS crashes!

B

I have had nothing but problems with Word. I am running Office 10.1.3
because I was told it was the most stable. Yesterday I removed every
single trace of MS Office from my computer, using the Remove Office
utility and manually removing the OfficePID and (10) Settings files.
I then ran Disk Warrior on my machine. Finally I removed the Font
Cache and all duplicate copies of fonts from my system. Then I
reinstalled Word.

Guess what? It still crashes all the time. When opening attachments
(especially from Apple Mail) and documents, when saving documents, or
just conveniently in the middle of when I'm working. I'm so
absolutely fed up with Word. Is there nothing else I can do?

Download the Office X 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 updates from Microsoft.
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX>

Update to the latest version of OS X you see in Software Update, which will
most likely either be 10.1.5 or 10.2.8.

Run Disk First Aid. Instructions on how to run it in OS X are located on
the Apple Knowledge Base.
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214>

Try repairing permissions.
For OS 10.2.x:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities. Open up Disk Utility. Select
your hard disk, then click the First Aid tab. Click the button to "Repair
Disk Permissions".

For OS 10.1.5:
Download the Repair Privileges utility, free from Apple, and run it:

Thanks for your reply Mickey. I am running 10.2.8 (as of yesterday,
before was running 10.2.7), and I frequently run Disk First Aid and
Repair Permissions. In fact, before I did the reinstall of Office
mentioned below, I booted from a CD and ran Disk Warrior 3. My system
is about as clean as one can be. Previous to the uninstall, I was
running Office 10.1.5 - and I had lots of problems. I read somewhere
on the boards here that 10.1.3 was more stable so I stopped there
during the reinstall. I'll try going up to 10.1.5, but I'm skeptical
because I'm already getting the same frequent crashes on 10.1.3.

Just installed 10.1.5 update...now the problem is even worse. I can't
open a document without Word crashing. This is SO FRUSTRATING. I've
paid hundreds of dollars for a bloated product that DOESN'T WORK! I
have done everything suggested here, as far as I can tell. How can
the product be so unstable?

Since this problem seems so intractable, in addition to the advice
Mickey gave, I'd recommend troubleshooting your fonts, especially
those in your Classic System:Font folder (just rename the folder
entirely if you're not running Classic). Then move on to your
~:Library:Fonts folder and finally the HD:Library:Fonts folder.

I use Word 10.1.4 every day under moderate load with nary a crash
(except for a frustrating problem when I try to manipulate the
Visual Basic Editor via VBA, but that's not germane here), so I know
it's possible.

Thanks for your advice. I don't run classic at all on my machine.
What do you mean by "troubleshooting" fonts? How do I do that?

badlydrawnboy,

I share your pain. I have been having no end of horrors with word
myself. (I have OfficeX). Operate on Mac OSX 2.6. Have the latest
OfficeX update. Tried everything. I believe it is a font handling
issue with Office itself as all my other applications (Illustrator,
Photoshop, Quark and everything else run with NO probs whatsoever. The
ONLY app in Office that runs with no probs at all is Entourage which I
love.

I wonder how come it is only Office that has this font handling issue?
Ten thousand frenchmen can't be wrong. Whatever it is they are using
with regards to font handling couldn't they pattern it like the others
do (more stable). I myself would like to have the benefit of enjoying
the product I have legitimately paid hard earned cash for but fraught
with frustration with these repetitive crashes. I keep hoping that
Office would release an update that will fix this problem but no such
luck so far. You name it, I have tried it.

By the way, don't downdload and install the Mac OSX 2.8 update. I've
read it has some bugs and they have pulled it.

Best of luck,

I would suggest to all of you with this problem that you check for corrupt
fonts. A detailed procedure is here:
<http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313535>

The new build of Mac OS X 10.2.8 (6R73) fixes the bugs present in the
original build of 10.2.8.

I just went through crash hell with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. None of them would start. After the splash screen I just got a window that said "Word has unexpectedly quit." After reading all your posts, I went to my fonts folder (user>library>fonts) dragged half of them to a new folder on the desktop I labeled "Font test" and restarted. Low and behold, Word started. Now I knoew that the problem font was in the Font Test folder. I continued dragging fonts back and foirth until I narrowed it down to one font. How the heck it got corrupted I have no idea - working one day and not the nest. Anyway, I trashed that font and now Word, Excel, and Powerpoint are happy. Why Microsoft builds a font management that is so poor I have no idea. At least I got it working for now! Hope this helps.
