I have office 2002, when we open word it is extremely slow and when closing
it is also slow. I have renamed the normal.dot and created a new one and it
is back to normal opening and closing, but as soon as I put back the old one
it slows down. Is there a way to edit the normal.dot and check where the
problem is? thanks

Don't put back the old one. Instead, use the Organizer in under "Tools
| Templates and Addins" to copy your customizations from the old
normal.dot to the new normal.dot.

thank you, but this user also has tool bar settings that need to be in the
layout, when I copied to the new Normal.dot from the backup.dot, It did not
have any toolbar layout that she had configured. Is there a way to bring
that in. It was not in the "tool bar" options in the organize.

I reset all the items in the Tool Bars and saved them to the new normal.dot
file as you suggested and we will see if this is going to work. It seems
faster now in opening and saving files.
