ok i had microsoft word, along with power point and such on my dock, it had a
black ? mark on it and somehow i ended up dragging it onto the desktop and
now its gone, nowhere to be found, i have no word processor now???? what did
i do? i have searched my computer everywhere and I have had a friend who is
good on Mac's search as well

No your application should not be gone. Obviously you must be fairly new
to Mac's.

If its on the doc its symbolic link (not an alias) to your application.
If you remove the application the link remains , but is broken because
it no long points to anything.

to get it back go to Applications look for either Office 2004 or 2008
(whichever you have) then click on desired application and drag to the
Dock. Your not actually moving the application as long as you drag to
Dock. Its just creating the symbolic link. Think of it like a remote
control for your car or TV when you click the on button on TV remote the
TV, the TV turns on. If you click open door on your remote for your car
the car door opens. The symbolic link is just a remote to turn on or
open an application.

now if the link had a question mark that means either the application
has been deleted or moved from it original position. You need to locate
the original Office Application (word in this case) and place it back in
the folder with excel PowerPoint, Entourage, and MSN Messenger. Then
Drag word to dock the click and hold mouse and move to a position next
to the other office applications.

All of the applications should be in a folder in your Applications folder on
your boot drive (Mac HDD).

Since you haven't said which version of Microsoft Office, we can't tell you
any more than that.

Phillip is correct: it sounds as though you have dragged the applications
from the application folder to somewhere else. Drag them back where they're
supposed to be, then drag each one back to the dock to create new symbolic
links.
