Word97 "cannot find the file" error

I think others have mentioned this problem in the past but I cannot seem to
find a reliable solution.

In Windows Explorer (ie in "My Documents") while Word is not running, I
click on a Word document file and Word attempts to open it but within
seconds there is a message "cannot find the file". But if I click again
(and possibly a third time) the file opens. It is as if Word needs more time
to open the file and decides too early that it isn't there.

I have tried reinstalling Word, and I have tried winword /r (as recommended
on the Microsoft site). I am running Windows 2000.

Is there a solution? Thanks.

Just a guess....
Do you have a virus scanner running?
If so, it could be performing a scan when the file open is detected.
